“Dr. Lynn Frickey has been one of our greatest supporters (writing two books-Whole in 2020 and Humanizing the Education Machine in 2017). Her career work with at-risk students helped us appreciate the very human side of our work. But, she also brought the academic rigor we needed to collaborate with educators. Dr. Frickey reverse-engineered education research and designed a breakthrough tool the Scale of Student Engagement/Disengagement (SOS ED). I visited a school, in its second year as a turnaround school, where they are using the SOS ED. Their attention to the problem got everyone on the same page and they developed a deeper appreciation for students and their challenges.” -- Rex Miller, President at Go Mind Shift

One of the first recommendations Dr. Frickey made after assessing our needs, was to assemble a team of staff to filter ideas and disseminate and gather information from all staff regarding our engagement endeavors. Just this one step alone, before we ever used the engagement tool, changed perception, and elevated our engagement work. We used the Scale of Student Engagement/Disengagement (SOS ED) to identify students at risk and create interventions. As a result of this work, one of the things we set up was a common place for teachers to log anecdotal information about the “at-risk” students we identified using the SOS ED. One girl, in particular, comes to mind- her name is Miranda (name changed). We already had identified this student as one who would be on our intervention list due to her scoring Highly Disengaged on the SOS ED. While we were still working on our plan to serve kids, teachers brought her to our attention again. She started missing school, getting poor grades, acting out, and developing a harsh personality. The log in which teachers were sharing information revealed Miranda’s parents' car had been repossessed and could not get to school. The good news…as a result of Dr. Frickey’s mentorship and her engagement tool, we had a plan in place to support Miranda. We figured out how to get her to school and teachers rallied to support her. Miranda’s behavior and emotional demeanor changed- her anger and passion were channeled and she has become a leader helping other kids who are starting to disengage. This was possible because Dr. Frickey showed us how to proactively identify students and create positive interventions. It takes the helplessness out of being a teacher when you see a student struggling! I would highly recommend the Scale of Student Engagement/Disengagement (SOS ED) to schools and educators as it is a game changer. Our students, and teachers are worth it! -Captain Neil May, USN (Retired). Science Teacher & Junior Navy Reserve ROTC, Washington High School, Washington, IN
“ I think it is important to understand that we have a bunch of students in our buildings every day. Some look like they are doing okay, and others do not. We are basing this on outdated and reactive metrics like attendance, discipline, and grades. Dr. Frickey is ahead of her time and has created a tool, the Scale of Student Engagement/Disengagement (SOS ED) that gives us folks in education a heads-up to support specific kids before they show up on our radars in other ways. We implemented this survey in Las Cruces when I was the superintendent there and it gave us amazing data we would not have discovered any other way. The key piece with Dr. Frickey and her work is that she walks you through what to do with the data to make a difference for kids and their teachers. It is crucial you 1) collect the data to know what’s going on with your students, but then 2) you use this information to make a difference in their school experience. I think this is leading-edge stuff that has a very relevant place in our schools right now. “
